The artist I chose was Aaron P. Decker.
I chose this artist because I was really drawn to their use of color and variety in textures in all of their jewelry. Decker makes necklaces, brooches and keychains that could most definitely be worn, some more complex or simple than others.
Decker is trying to convey his emotions about what it felt like to grow up queer in a military household/living on military bases and constantly relocating.
The jewelry includes a lot of symbols and imagery pertaining to the military and the artist successfully contrasts a very industrial and mechanical look with very colorful and playful patterns and shapes. I think the use of color and military imagery portrays his experience of being queer around a military enviroment. Decker captures the authoritative and mechanical nature of the military and contrasts this successfully with his personal experiences of who he is through the use of juxtaposition in textures, imagery and colors.
I think that imagery in his artwork is very successful in getting people to inquire what the piece is about. The use of materials, imagery and colors all come together successfully to potentially incite conversation about, not only growing up queer in a military environment, but but issues that can arise for people of the LGBTQ community who are serving in the military.
